I am Professor Philippa Ascough, Head of the NEIF Environmental Radiocarbon Laboratory and Professor of Geoscience at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC), University of Glasgow. My research broadly covers the biogeochemical cycling of carbon in terrestrial environments, with a particular focus on the source, age and fate of carbon in soils and sediments, including fire-derived, or pyrogenic carbon. In this work, I apply radiocarbon measurement of environmental samples (solids, liquids, gases), including the development of novel techniques to analyze these materials. My team and I are also currently involved in designing and creating low-cost field-sampling solutions, particularly for remote and challenging environments.
